Life in Bend, Oregon often feels like a dream come true! Some of the greatest struggles we Bendites face daily are deciding where to go kayaking, what brewery to check out for lunch, and what grocery store to swing by after work. With so much to experience here, we pride ourselves in choosing local markets first, and in Bend, there is no shortage of options.
Picture this. You wake up to sunshine peaking through your window and an excitement for the perfect summer day ahead. You put on your favorite summer outfit (including a tee from your favorite local brewery), load up the cooler, strap on your kayak, and you’re out the door!
Hop in the car and head to Backporch Coffee Roasters westside location, a locals' favorite. You order the honey lavender latte, because it’s the best thing you’ve had in your life! From the coffee shop, you head across the street to Newport Avenue Market, a locally owned grocery store, to purchase everything needed for lunch on the lake. The deli is great and you can even get a fresh sandwich made just the way you like it, before heading down the beer aisle. They have some of the best selection in town and the most knowledgeable staff.
Once you’ve packed up the cooler with snacks, it’s time to start your journey to the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. If you don’t have the gear you need, you can stop at one of the outdoor stores on your way there. With so many lakes to choose from off of the Cascade Lakes Highway (you really can’t go wrong), you chose to kayak Devils Lake. Paddle to a quiet spot, enjoy your delicious lunch from Newport Avenue Market, and take in the beautiful mountain view. Be careful not to fall in, the water is pretty cold!
After you’ve worn yourself out on the lake, it’s time to head back to Bend. Stop by Cascade Lakes Brewery, the closest brewery to the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, for a cold, refreshing beer. Cascade Lakes is the second oldest brewery in Bend, Oregon and offers a wide variety of beer and more. They even have a patio that allows pets. In case you haven't heard, we’re obsessed with dogs in Bend!
Just a few blocks from Cascade Lakes Brewery, unwind with a stroll around Drake Park and continue towards Downtown Bend for some of the best local shopping. If it’s the first Friday of the month, be sure to check out the First Friday Art Walk featuring local art and wine. While you’re downtown, stop by the Pine Tavern for dinner. This restaurant has been a local favorite since it opened in 1936! What’s unique about this building isn’t just it’s history, it also has a giant Ponderosa pine tree growing the middle of the dining room!
